Black Cap Caucus Mar 28, 2016

One of my favorite things about spring is watching and listening to all the birds.
From this artist’s perspective, it’s a lot more fun than TV.
Chickadees, for example, appear rather considerate and agreeable.
They just don’t seem to have much interest at all in squabbling.
How refreshing

I always look forward to the “chick-A-Dee-Dee-dee- song of our ilttle clown friends the chickadees. You have captured them beautifully. Thank you and I so enjoy your paintings!

  • Steve Gilzow says:

Lovely painting. Reminds me of a favorite quotation from Henry Van Dyke, which I keep visible in the studio: “Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.”

  • Victoria says:

OH! These sweet creatures….How WONDROUS their song! Still yet, and once again, you captured the essence of innocence, humility and beauty….GIFTED artist and humanitarian that you are! Vermont is blessed to have you …thankfully, they share you with the rest of us!
Go gently through this week, Peter…

What a sweet composition, Peter! And you are right that they don’t waste time squabbling. They go about their business peacefully and in tune with their environment. We should all ponder on the world of the chickadee and take note.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks so much Victoria. I notice when I paint anything, I develop a sort of “empathy” with the subject while I’m painting. For a few fleeting moments, I “feel” like a chickadee. Fun!

  • Brian Blaine says:

Chickadees are without a doubt my favorite birds. They have let their presence be known at some very significant times in my life. You have done a beautiful job simplifying their markings and shapes, and creating a wondrous harmony by repetition of their colors and light values throughout the painting.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Another excellent artistic analysis Brian. I started this with a muted, warm, organic underpainting, aiming for that natural harmony from the start. As for the birds…”repetition with variety.”

’tis the season! Our back yard has the scene…flitting back and forth to get a seed. We have a collection and today saw the first full color change of a male finch; NICE yellow. Special presentation you created…thank you.. Cindy
