Comtu Falls Jun 12, 2017

The mighty Black River cascades into downtown Springfield.

Aptly named by local Indians, Comtu means “Great Noise”.

The river provided a great source of power to 20th century industry.

Last week it provided this artist with a great subject.

I’m often asked what my favorite thing to paint is.

And the Winners Are…

Each month I draw two random Day in Vermont subscribers to win a free print of their choice.

It’s one small way I can say thanks for your continuing support.

Our first winner for June is Susan Rogers of Proctorsville VT. Susan chose “Apple of my eye”, and had this to say…

“I have traveled all over the United States, and spent some time in a few States before I settled in Vermont. I love the change of seasons. I love driving the back roads every day that surprise me with a different view. Thanks Peter for capturing so much of what I love about Vermont!”

Our second winner is Carol Kurto of Saratoga Springs, NY. Carol chose “Sissy’s Garden” and this to say…

My husband, Peter, and I love Vermont  for many reasons, but primarily because of the beautiful scenery and the tranquility and peace we feel whenever we drive over the border from New York to Vermont. We especially enjoy the artwork, photography, quaint inns  and restaurants we visit as well as the Vermont Cheese Farms and the artisanal bakeries. Being a retired chef, my husband truly believes that the cheeses and breads created in Vermont are the best in the world! The Vermont artists, authors and organic farmers create products unlike anywhere in our vast country. Your  artwork, Peter, captivates the aura of this unique state and that is why we own many of your wonderful prints. We are pleased to know we will now own an additional print of yours entitled “Sissy’s Garden” . Thank you so much for choosing us and sending us this gorgeous print . We hope you will soon create a painting of “The Reluctant Panther  Inn”, as we are headed there on Monday to celebrate our 52nd Anniversary! Thank you again , and we look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. Sincerely, Carol and Peter Kurto”

As always I love this painting. You make my Monday special. I hope I can visit Vermont someday. Thanks Again

  • Brian Blaine says:

That was a tough subject! A lot of colors, architectural shapes, and difficult perspective issues. This would be a good subject for a larger, studio-painted version. I like the color mixes and textures you used on the old factory building. My father worked in a Springfield machine job for a time more than eighty years ago. Not sure what building, but you very well may have painted it!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Brian, I felt this was a gritty, real, earthy subject, and yes a challenge. Indeed, I think it could be a stunner large. Who knows…

  • Sandee James says:

Your style is so unique.About two and a half yrs. ago you painted a painting of my Grandson. He was in a canoe with his dog. He was fishing.Something he loved to do.He had died. But your painting was so beautiful for all of us.To look at that, and feel how peaceful he looked.Thank you for that.

  • Jim Bales says:

I first saw Vermont at the age of 10. Fell in love instantly. My mom and dad bought a little cabin in Corinth with no electricity or running water. It was a true adventure at such a young age. Today we still go there to a beautiful new camp house that was built by my nephew Paul Bales. He cut down the trees on our property and milled every stitch of lumber in that house. I am no 75 years old and still love Vermont, though I am no longer able to travel to our summer home, so I am so pleased to find this lovely web site. Thank you.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Vermont (and art) has a beautiful way of bring us together. Kindred spirits we are. Thanks Jim, and welcome aboard!

  • Irene Rice says:

I have a small house with limited wall space and a senior citizen budget so it is not likely I can buy one of your beautiful paintings. I love your paintings because they depict Vermont as I remember it on visits to this wonderful state.
I send lots of correspondence by note cards and I am wondering if you sell note cards with pictures of some of your works? I would like to buy in the quantity of 25 or 50; with envelopes. I will appreciate your reply.

  • Susan Roberts says:

Nice! Like the splashes of orange, greens, etc…Looks complicated to paint that one! Thank you.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Susan, yes lots of stuff to juggle in this one. It’s good to push our limits and try hard stuff.

  • Peg Lee says:

    Love your work!!!!

  • cynthia adams says:

Your painting shows us the depth of history in one town…amazing what the work and products must have provided from the mills. As a child we had very close friends in the town and I lived there for a span of time. Thank you once again for another Day In Vermont…. Cynthia

  • Doris Michel says:

Hi Peter, that looks very interesting. The church in the background and these old rusty industrial buildings placed near the river. Another aspect of Vermont not as pittoresk as usual. Great idea!
