Little Lake Oct 2, 2017
I was quietly painting this southerly view on Lake St. Catherine last week.
Then I spotted movement.
Like she did it every day, a deer jumped into the water on the far shore between two camps and swam straight across the channel.
I almost called this one “Deer Crossing.”

Art in the Park
It’s that time of the year, and I’ll be at Art in the Park this weekend, October 7 & 8, in Rutland, Vermont.
Stop by and say hello if you are in the area. I’ll look forward to seeing you!
Hi Peter. Hope all is well with you. I have fond memories of staying at a cabin on Lake St. Catherine many years ago. Beautiful painting.
Thank you Steve, all the best from Vermont!
Lovely painting….I have always enjoyed cattails. Wonderful that you saw and photographed the doe. Deer are beautiful. Cabin on a smaller lake is a gift. Thank you for a welcomed spot in our day. Cynthia
I was in the right spot at the right time. Thanks Cynthia!
Grew up in Poultney. Loved and still do Lake St. Catherine. Many happy hours spent there in the summertime. Beautiful painting. seeing the deer cross must have been awesome.
It was Jackie. Not a bad spot to be found on this lake. Thanks Jackie!
The perks of painting outdoors. What a nice treat for you! Serene painting by the way.
Thank you Carol!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you!
My family, growing up started renting a cottage on the lake back in the 50’s then my Dad bought the place in 1961.Many,many families have enjoyed the lake since then and have created their own memories at Huss-l-in.Lake St.Catherine will always be a special place.Thank you for beautifully capturing my favorite place in the world.
Glad you like it Walter, thank you!
Beautiful Lake St.Catherine. Said to be one of the cleanest lakes in VT.
So very beautful!!
It sure looks clean to me. Thanks Joan!
Just beautiful, Peter. We are lucky to wake up each morning in awe of the beauty of Lake St Catherine. Such talent to capture the scene for all to enjoy. Look forward each Monday to your artistic surprise. Will be returning to Texas in a couple of weeks. You will be keeping us in Vermont focus. Thanks !
Happy I can keep sending you a little taste of Vermont throughout the winter Jane, thanks!
I Love It! Thanks for the picture of the deer crossing the lake! I have never seen a deer swim before! Amazing!
I had heard of it, but this was the first time I saw one do it. Thanks Judy!
A beautiful painting… I like your style.
Thanks Barbara!
NICE!
Thanks Robert!
Spend many days boating on lake st catherine, enjoy seeing you paint the lake
Thanks Rhonda!
Many great memories on Lake St. Catherine and Poultney. Love the village and the wonderful people who reside there! Beautiful painting of the lake and a peek at the deer❤ Thank you for that, M.L.Marcell Cameron
Indeed! Thanks ML!
Autumn trees across the lake seem to enhance and echo similar colors from amongst the near rushes and cattails. When young, I used to shout across still waters on a similar lake and listen to another type of echo bounce off the mountains, returning my call ! A beautiful painting, Peter, stimulating beautiful memories. Thank you, as always.
You are still sending a clear call across open water Brian, and here is your echo…Thank you!
We now live on the LIttle Lake and look forward to the beauty and wildlife we see daily no matter the time of year. Love this painting and photo.
Thank you Deb, life is good!
I love it, Peter. Thank you.
Thanks Mary!
Love the back story to this beautiful painting!
Thanks Kim!
Absolutely love it!
Thanks Susan!
Peter,
How I envy the times you are having painting these beautiful pictures. I like to hunt, but my favorite part of hunting is the wildlife encounters. I have followed all of your paintings of recent date and you are doing a wonderful job documenting the picturesque and historical qualities of our wonderful State of Vermont.
Thanks Sylvia, I used to hunt and I agree, my favorite part was always just observing nature. Then I discovered I was much more successful (and happy) going out “hunting” with a paintbrush.
This painting is lovely with your sense of quiet beauty. I was born and raised in the Northeast Kingdom of Vt. and love the memories of my childhood. Camping in a large Army tent all summer at Nichol’s Pond tops the list. Susan
