Over the Hill Nov 23, 2015

The old Galick Farmstead sits high above the southern tip of Lake Champlain in West Haven, back-lit by the late afternoon sun.

The Goldenrod is all gone by and Milkweed pods open to a chilly November wind.

Autumn ages gracefully but she’s ready to turn the page.

In old age, wisdom, truth, and natural beauty abound.

We’d like to purchase an 11 X 14 unframed print of Bristol Falls but would prefer to drop over and pick it up, rather than paying $10 to ship it across Middletown Springs. Please advise. (802) 235-2181

  • I am a native New England artist who has been living for forty years in the Southwest. I rely on your posts to keep me in rhythm with the seasonal changes of my part of the country. The subtle swings of light, colors and temperature are all there. Beautiful work. Thank you for the postings and Happy Holidays. Louise Sackett http://www.pleinspeaking.blogspot.com

Thank you Louise, glad I can send you a little bit of New England seasonal light each week. All the best from home!

  • David Churchill says:

Nice picture. Reminds me of my grandfather’s place in Berlin, VT. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family.

  • Sandy Morgan says:

Thank you for bringing Vermont to me. I have been in upstate NY for 40 years transplanted from Maine. I absolutely love your paintings and , at age 77, they remind me so much of my beloved rural New England. Thank you so much.

  • Chris Thrane says:

    Another great creation Peter!

  • Brian Blaine says:

You have captured the mood of early November in the Vermont countryside so well. The subtle shades of blues to grays honor the chill air and autumn light. And I can almost hear the rattle of dry milkweed stalks in the wind. Hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends over Thanksgiving.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Brian, this time of year we artists have to look just a little bit “deeper” to find beauty in the brownness of Nov. But it’s there, and like exercising in a gym to build muscles, (I know nothing about that!) the more practice we have at “meaningful observation”, the more we begin to see. And once we see it (and feel it), we can hope to express it in paint.

I turned 60 today and if this is what over the hill looks like, then I am a happy person. So beautiful and thank you for brightening my day.

  • Linda says:

I’m a brand new convert to your site and love the way you paint. Over the Hill is lovely. This is a wonderful and personal way to display your work.
