Williamsville Bridge Mar 13, 2017

Williamsville Bridge in Newfane, Vermont.

With a Nor’easter on the way it looks like I’ll get to do a few more snow scenes.

Come what may, I do try to savor every day.

Ahhh…. Plein Air!

While I usually opt for the comforts of the studio during much of the winter here in Vermont, I’m always ready to take advantage of a reasonably warm day to paint outdoors on location.

Here are two such paintings recently completed.

And the Winners Are…

Each month I draw two random Day in Vermont subscribers to win a free print of their choice. It’s one small way I can say thanks for your tremendous support.

Our first winner is Beth Stanton of Pittsfield, Vermont. Beth chose “Amee Farm” and had this to say…

“I always look forward to ‘A Day in Vermont’ on Monday mornings because I love seeing Peter’s artistic interpretations of familiar places in Vermont. My Vermont roots go back to my Great Great Great Grandparents who settled in St. Johnsbury area around 1850, coming from Ireland with their seven children. Although, I’ve spent my life between VT and CT, many of Peter’s paintings remind me of childhood, as well as fond memories throughout the years. I chose a print of Amee Farm because the location is near our home in Pittsfield and I had the pleasure of watching Peter paint Amee Farm at the Killington Art Garage Demonstration with my cousin. Thank you so much for this opportunity!”

Our second winner is Janet Siegel of Chatham, New Jersey, Janet chose “Arlington Dairy Bar” and had this to say…

“We love seeing you work thru your emails. If you recall Brian and I live and work in New Jersey and also have a home in Arlington. We have a couple of your pieces  would love to continue our collection! The one that caught our eye is the Arlington Dairy Bar. We love your interpretation of the buildings we have come to know so well on our weekend visits.  Someday we will be in Vermont on a more permanent basis but until then we settle for our extended weekends and your lovely artwork! Arlington Vermont is a special to us as we find ourselves inspired by its beauty. From our walks along the river to the hikes on the logging trails we always find new views and vistas that renew our spirit! Thank you for keeping us in touch!”

Hi Peter – Very fine painting. I love the looseness. This bridge is right down the road from me. The green house belongs to the sculptor, Paul Bowen. http://www.paulbowen.org

  • Brian Blaine says:

Color choice and moderate light values brought a strong memory of an overcast and “slushy” day in early March to the painting of the Williamsville Bridge. In contrast, higher key warm and cool color contrasts of Smith Farm and Wilderness Meadow sing joyfully of warmer days to come! Nice work!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Brian, yes quite a chroma difference between an overcast day (Bridge) and bright sunny ones. At least in the way I portrayed them this time. 🙂

  • Deb Farrington says:

I don’t know how you keep up the pace ! I
    look forward to Monday’s post.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

It’s my full time job Deb, so if I want to eat I have to work. Loving my job helps, too. Thank you!

  • Melodie says:

I love covered bridges, and your painting of the Williamsville Bridge is endearing. Thank you for the bonus photos! The Smith Farm is my favorite of the two. I am associated with a horse rescue, so I have a spot in my heart for barns and horses. I’m already looking forward to next Monday’s painting. 🙂

Congratulations to the winners, Beth and Janet!

  • Pam Baldwin says:

I live in Maine, but have earler ties to Vermont. So, I look forward to my

  • Glendeen Parent says:

Very happy to receive your paintings this week! The silvery/white of the bridge and mother Nature are nicely captured w/ your brush. Cynthia
