Cascade Aug 1, 2013

A Vermont stream cascades down the mountain in a succession of crystal clear pools.

An ancient staircase of stone sculpted by masons of earth and time.

The falling water sings its sweet song to the forest. And anyone else who’d like to listen.

Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.

Thanks Barby. Other than thinking about a possible waterfall painting for several weeks, I had no formal plan or thumbnail compositional sketch for this one. I just started putting on (and taking off) paint. Occasionally that works!

I’m partial to landscapes and this is spot on Peter! You have truly captured the essence of Vermont in all its natural glory, simple elegance, and serenity. Splendid palette choice! Thank you.

Thanks for the nice comment Joan. While painting this I had lots of fond memories of deep woods babbling brooks running though my head. Maybe some of that good stuff somehow found its way into the piece.

  • I think this might well be my absolute favorite of all your paintings!!! I love this!

  • Teresa weber says:

Lovely!! Having seen a beautiful waterfall in Vermont, I can say you have captured it with a master’s hand! Beautiful color contrast.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Teresa! The funny (and true) thing is, I don’t know if I could do it again. Some paintings just kind of paint themselves and then I wonder afterwards how I did it. I think maybe the secret is letting it happen and getting out of our own (self conscious) way.

  • Mary Fran says:

Wow! One of my favorites too, Peter. I love the contrast & can feel the water “falling”! Such a treat every time we get to see another beautiful painting of yours. Thanx again & again 🙂

  • Anne C. says:

I can just hear the water just babbling along in this painting Peter.
It’s a very calming picture for me. Love it!

Peter, This is just beautiful. Waterfalls like this always send me back to Vermont! So peaceful. I could stare at it all day long.

  • Martha Patton says:

Your painting makes me think of sections of the Mill River through Clarendon Gorge. Thanks for the beautiful reminder!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Martha, I can hear the rain outside my studio window this morning. (it’s still dark out) The streams will be running a little faster today.

is this Hamilton Falls? Recently visited Hamilton Falls. Coming from Virginia I can only say “the water” was cold.I enjoy your Day in Vermont. Keep painting. Best, Pat

Hello Pat and thanks for the comment. I am not familiar with Hamilton Falls, but I will have to look for it. This steam I used for inspiration run along Rt 140 just east of Wallingford. The road twists and turns heading up the mountain and hugs against the rock ledges.
