Farewell Party Nov 9, 2015

A great gaggle of geese gather along Otter Creek before their southbound journey.

Old friendships are rekindled and big plans are made.

Here’s to a safe and happy flight!

The light, color, and sparkling reflections of the scene reminded me of a bubbly glass of champagne.

A fitting way to say farewell.

What are the odds anyway?

As most of you know, each month I draw one random Day in Vermont subscriber to win a free print.

It’s one small way I can say thanks for your generous support.

I use Random.org to generate a random number that coresponds with the number of our subscribers.

Every subscriber has an equal chance of winning each month.

With about 5000 current subscribers, your chances of winning are a lot better than the lottery.

Even so, I’ve decided to up the ante a bit and perhaps increase your odds.

If and when we hit 7000 subscribers, I’ll give away two prints each month.

If you have friends who might enjoy A Day in Vermont, please consider inviting them to subscribe. Thank you!

And the winner is…

Congratulations to our November winner, Barbara Densmore of Rutland, Vermont.

Barbara chose “A Road Less Traveled“, and had this to say…

“You are always so generous with your paintings as we see them in so many places around the Rutland area. I had a hard decision between “Along The Trail” as we loved x-country skiing in younger days but decided on “A Road Less Traveled” as it showed more of your artistic talent in the long views as well as a favorite poem title. I am so fortunate to have lived in Vermont for over 50 years and wonder at its beauty every day. Beauty that you capture so well in your paintings. Thank you Peter, I will love having your print!”

Thanks very much Anita for all your support! I live here and I see new and beautiful things every day. I look forward to seeing you at my studio some day!

  • Charlotte Birchmore says:

    LOVE the geese. Wonderful, Peter.

  • David Churchill says:

Lucky winner! That is a lovely picture, so calming and peaceful.

  • Muriel Brown says:

You have captured another seasonal beauty that occurs at this time of year. So many times we have looked up to see that special V in the air. And then again to see them resting by the hundreds in a nearby pond before setting off to settle for the winter. Thanks again!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

The fall and spring geese offer us one of those deeper “connections” where we experience the natural rhythm of nature… that can take us (if only for a moment) out of our usual fast paced modern mode. Maybe art can do that too. Thanks Muriel!

Love the colors. What you can do with a few strokes of a brush. Amazing!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Nancy, I’ll admit that this painting had a few more than my usual few strokes. It’s the ones you leave alone that count!

  • Monique says:

Oh! the sparkles of the lake.
Yes, it is time to say goodbye to our geese, but what fun to hear them honking amongst the fall colors.
    Lovely!
We always go to Addison to see the snow geese at this time and what a ruckus it is…Monique

  • Deanie says:

Another stunning view of autumn in Vermont! The reflections are so clear. Thanks for sharing your talent

  • Brian Blaine says:

I see this scene repeated almost daily on the pond near my home. Autumn would not be quite the same without geese. The predominance of blues and grays in this painting remind me that colder days are on their way. Even the large and sunlit boulder in the picture could easily become a snow-dusted boulder in an early winter scene. The unique, (Huntoon-style) linear treatment of the gentle ripples and waves in the water could easily become the thin coat of new ice on a November morning. Thank you, Peter. I really enjoyed this weeks painting.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

It won’t be long Brian before that ice starts forming. In this painting I countered the aerial perspective “rule” that warm colors go in front and cools in the back. But like some wise artist once said, “First learn the rules, and THEN break them.”

  • Wendy Schwarz says:

    Hello Peter,
What an exquisite capture of geese! Your mind’s view captures a true moment of fall!
We were just talking about how this time of year can be so enlightening. You capture this so well
using lovely techniques to capture the eye and bring in the moment to me. I love
The use of your red dots! What a way to have the eye celebrate and converse
    With the geese!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Wendy! Yes, November is a great month, exposing the rugged “bones” of the landscape after the leaves fall. And a few well placed color notes can add a little sparkle.

  • Martha says:

Good morning, Peter! We visited your studio while you were working on this painting. It’s kind of magical how you have captured this fleeting moment in time! Very special! Thank you! Martha and David

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I often think of a painting as a little time capsule, in that it captures a little moment in time. Art radiates with the mood of the artist along with the ambient environment in which it was created. If this is true, your positive energy is part of the DNA of this painting. Thank you for that Martha and David!

Always a pleasure to see another inspiring painting of nature around us. On Monday when your painting arrived, the immediate e-mail preceding it was from our NH Loon Center w/ a pic of loons and title Time to Fly; so many of our feathered friends going on their winter adventure. Cindy
