Green Mountain Boys Jul 18, 2016

The Green Mountain Boys were alive and well last weekend at the Battle of Hubbardton reenactment.

“Here, on the steamy morning of July 7, 1777, the Green Mountain Boys and others stayed behind as a rear guard to slow the advance of the Redcoats so the main American force would have time to retreat. On these green hills, the Americans made a defiant stand. Though outnumbered, the Americans successfully halted the British, and retreated southward, winning successful battles later that year at Bennington and Saratoga.”

Awesome painting! Just curious how big prints are and what they go for price wise?

There is something especially moving about standing under an ancient tree, perhaps in a field, or at a long established crossroads, and pondering the history of the location. This painting speaks of such a place. The tree leans a bit into the battle, lower left branch echoing the line of muskets raised. The clouds and smoke seem to mingle and blend until they then are lost in in a timeless blue sky. You have created a beautiful pictorial rendition of a day in history when, as happens again and again, hopes and dreams are both shattered and born.

I, and likely others, now look forward to your poetic appraisal and brilliant compositional analysis, Brian. Now that you have established a high bar and set expectations, you and I are both challenged to produce something good every week. Not a bad thing. 🙂

Like the men up there on the hill last weekend, that old maples’ ancestors surely dotted the battlefield back in 1777. Thanks Cynthia!
