Triple Crown Jun 8, 2015

I don’t know much about horse racing, but I know a striking composition when I see it.

A Vermont farmhouse, blooming lilacs, and the 57′ John Deere made for a terrific trifecta.

The odds were in my favor.

I thanked Jim (Dudley) for parking his tractor in the perfect position for me.

Farmer Jim: “Well that’s exactly where it broke down.”

Each month I give away a free print to one random Day in Vermont subscriber.

Congratulations to our June winner, Alyssa Adamsen of Pittsford, Vermont.

Alyssa chose “Vermont Vista” and had this to say…

“I’ve grown up in Vermont and attend college at Saint Michael’s, I just can’t leave. I enjoy the outdoors and activities like: kayaking, hiking, and bike riding. I love the abundance of small town and farm life scenery throughout Vermont. I plan to stay in Vermont and keep enjoying life along with your artwork.”

Hallo, this nice picture reminds me on Germany. You can also find such a view in German villages. Greetings from Germany Doris

  • Cathy Mainolfi says:

This picture of the farmhouse and old John Deere tractor looks like Shrewsbury, Vt..beautiful

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Could be anywhere in Vermont Cathy, but this one is less than a mile from my house on Rt 140 in Middletown Springs. Mary Parker’s home. I go by often and when I saw the tractor I could not resist!

  • This is the PERFECT “Trifecta!” No competition, no chance for animals to be hurt, just BEAUTY TO BEHOLD! (Love Farmer Jim’s response!!!) and yes….you know “a thing or two” about STRIKING COMPOSITION!

  • Deb Travers says:

I love everything about this painting. All the things I have loved about growing up in Vt in one photo!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I felt the same way while painting it Deb, lot’s of good summertime memories on “the farm”. In my case that was in East Poultney on Aunt Ella and Uncle Bob Scott’s. I can almost hear the wind chimes on the porch in the breeze.

  • Tammy Hawkins says:

    Love it very pretty

  • Brian Blaine says:

You made the John Deere look a bit younger and straighter than it really is…usually a good idea when doing a portrait commission too! As always, a very nice painting.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Sound wisdom regarding portraits Brian! When folks ask me about doing one, I quote John Singer Sargent: “Every time I paint a portrait I lose a friend.”

  • Arlene Hirst says:

Peter, you have really captured the essence of Vermont in the springtime! IPerfect.

  • Judy Crowley says:

This is special! I love it!

  • Muriel Brown says:

Every Monday we gasp at what you have for our enjoyment. You have the best of the best talent, work, play, and you share it all with us. This is just another beauty that keeps reminding us of why we live here! Thanks again and again!

  • Jesse Lobel says:

the road is a perfect leading line.
all your paintings show good composition.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you very much Jesse, some subjects have to be “adjusted” a bit, but this one seemed ready made.

  • Anita Cronk says:

    So cute

  • Traci Templeton says:

This is my first week of receiving ‘A Day in Vermont’- feeling blessed. Crisp yet not- remarkable! Thank you!

Oh Peter, how I look forward to getting your art work on line. I this is just wonderful, and yes reminds me of my childhood in a very small town, Lebanon, CT. Many homes of this color and yes, tractors everywhere could be seen an heard. The days when we kids could walk the town roads and parents did not worry because in a small country town everyone knew everyone and you wouldn’t dare get into any trouble because you knew someone would tell your folks and yes, we would have to answer to Dad when he got home from work. I was one of nine children. What happy days those were. I thank you for reminders of the past in all your art work. You are a wonderful artist Peter!!! Sincerely, Winnie Jackson Mansfield Ctr., CT

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks much for your kind words Winnie. In my opinion, if a painting can bring someone a few moments of joy and (fond) memories, it will always have value above and beyond the market “sale price”. Art does some amazing things for us.

  • Debbie Sanborn says:

    Dear Peter,
We can not thank you enough for the beautiful painting our daughters asked you to create in honor of our upcoming 35th anniversary. Peter, you have captured the spirit of a house truly being home! John and I were thrilled to spend time with you and watch that spirit come to life. The grace and creativity you showed us was so heartfelt words are not enough. Each time I pass one of your creations in my home a warm smile takes hold and I count my blessings for the beauty that surrounds each and every one of us!
Blessings and thanks, Debbie and John Sanborn

    • Peter Huntoon says:

The pleasure was all mine Debbie, thank you for your kind words. Making nice people happy with my art is my life’s’ work so you have made me very happy in turn. I wish you and John the very best in your next big adventure, and i hope you will visit again soon! P.

  • Suzanne Wargo says:

Vermont is a piece of heaven and you capture it beautifully..

  • Wendy Schwarz says:

    Thank you Peter,
You are opening up a whole new perspective in painting to me. I love the way you work with washes; molding them into such breathtaking scenes and subjects! I would love to come see you at work. Your openness, caring and trust in sharing your beautiful talent is such an elixir to the spirit!
    In Gratitude,
    Wendy Schwarz, Chester, VT

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Wendy for your nice comment, I’ll be scheduling an “On the Spot” opportunity sometime soon so maybe you can come and watch in person. After many years of painting I have discovered that one of the most gratifying aspects of being an artist (at least for this one) is sharing the creative experience with others who also choose to appreciate it.

  • David Churchill says:

Love that painting. It reminds me of my grandfather’s place in Berlin. It, too, had lilacs growing against the house. Always so pretty when the bloomed. Thanks for the memory!
