West Rutland Marsh Jun 20, 2016

The West Rutland Marsh Boardwalk is one of my favorite hidden jewels.

I often stop by on my way home.

Wildlife abounds, and many of my bird subjects have been found here.

My last visit was on a beautiful emerald day. I couldn’t resist the temptation of the late afternoon light.

It’s amazing what we can find on the way home.

On the Spot with Peter Huntoon

Every now and then I extend an open invitation to join me for an authentic Vermont painting experience.

On Thursday (June 23) of this week from 9AM until noon I’ll be painting right in my backyard.

Artists are welcome to set up and paint alongside. We always learn from each other.

Non-artists are welcome to watch and enjoy.

The weather forecast looks good, and if it does happen to rain we can always retreat to my studio.

My plan right now is to paint the purple Irises in my wife’s garden, but there are plenty of other options too.

This is a free, casual, come as you are event. Bring a chair and your coffee thermos.

After a morning of painting, you might want to consider a delicious lunch at Sissy’s Kitchen right down the road.

And for Dessert…

I’ll also be painting a bit at Middletown Springs’ annual Strawberry Festival this coming Sunday, June 26, from 2:00 – 4:00PM.

Art, music, and more, but the star of the show of course will be the Strawberry Shortcake with Vanilla ice cream.

Come on over to Middletown Springs for a real Vermont summertime classic!

I can just hear the red winged blackbird announcing a visitor to the marsh! Beautiful and peaceful with it’s own songs to sing. Loving marsh life and all it has to offer us!

It was my luck to live on the Whipple Hollow road for 4
Years. Came home to over 200 red winged blackbirds
Back in the marsh after a long winter. Beautiful Robin red
Breasts sang the new spring songs.

Rebirth, hope came to the marsh
    This exquisite painting reminds me.

The marsh views are serene, but, oh, the delights of Sissy’s Kitchen are unparalleled. I still remember the gorgeous loaves of bread all stacked up and the apple pie I bought as a thank-you for my hosts. It doesn’t get any better!

I can’t compete with Sissy, especially around supper time. She is a fine (food) artist indeed!

  • Brian Blaine says:

Nice job capturing the spirit of the marsh. As shown in the photo reference, the scene is a bit plain and even rather uninspiring. However, through interesting abstractions, bold color and value choices, and intriguing use of repetition of shapes (foreground boulders and mid-ground trees) the artistic end result is great. Aren’t wetlands awesome places to visit !!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Brian, as I am sure you know very well, art is a means of self expression. I think the best art shows evidence of a unique perspective and personality behind the brush….something that goes beyond factual reporting. In the painters case, it’s not articulated in words, but with rich juicy paint. In my case, I try to communicate and share with the viewer WHY I painted a subject, in addition to what.

NICE, Peter…from foreground to the clouds… what a busy, enjoyable schedule you have. So glad you share all Cynthia

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Cynthia, I have my share of behind the scenes grunt work to attend to, but I probably have a little more than my share of creative joy sprinkled in as well, and I love sharing that joy with others any chance I get. I’m grateful for that opportunity every single day.

As usual, another beauty with the redwinged blackbird adding a special touch. I’m not in Vermont right now but I’m hoping you will extend another painting invitation later this summer!
