Dorset Inn Dec 15, 2014

The Dorset Inn has been welcoming travelers since 1796.

And travel was tough going through snow storm last week.

From the windows a warm holiday glow radiates into the frigid white night of December.

Coming in from the cold is an art form in Vermont.

When the weather outside is frightful, the fire is so delightful!

Winter’s Come
By James Mee
12/1/14

December’s snow clouds
so big,
as if to touch the moon, have fallen.
What else could they do?

A storm of dark, white grace
piled upon this frozen paradise.
Her tumult gone now
leaving this still and starry night.

Evening’s brought its pale-moon dreams
to the snowdrifts that tower over
back road fences.

The icicles, flaked,
reflect the starlight
like a thousand prism-ed mirrors.

We, all of us, are ready and aware.
The long sleep has arrived.
There’s not a stir in the wood
nor the farmer’s fields.

Winter’s come
upon the north wind.
And, like the smoke from our chimneys,
all is silent.

BEAUTIFUL! The painting, the statement and the poem!
Thanks for taking care of getting my card pack to me of Stone Mountain. Much appreciation!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Betsy, I think art and poetry both have the potential (maybe purpose) to open a window. It lets in a little fresh air.

What a great picture in time for Christmas!

  • Muriel Brown says:

We love the old country inns in Vermont especially when they are decorated for Christmas and surrounded by snow. Another beautiful choice to portray on your magical canvases! We also want everyone to know what a treasure your book ” A Day in Vermont” is . It sits on our coffee table for all to see and reflect on the past year of the beauty you have captured that surrounds us. Thanks, Peter

I have been wanting to paint this for a while, and when the snow came it was the right time. The last couple of years I have fallen in love with white. It’s purity, temperature variations, and subtleties. Not altogether easy to paint, but very satisfying. Sargent was one master. Thanks very much for the Book recommendation Muriel!

  • Helen Hadley says:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the winter scenes!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you very much Helen, having the pleasure of painting beautiful winter scenes makes the cold just a little easier to tolerate.

  • Marjorie Weiss says:

Beautiful painting of one of our favorite places in Vermont!

  • Brian Dugan says:

Fantastic painting for Christmas. I think this might be the place I remember my mother telling me she went for dinners and to see summer theatre. It would have been in the late 60s or early 70s. Thanks for the memories and Merry Christmas.
