East Poultney Church Apr 11, 2016

If walls could talk, community churches throughout Vermont would sure have a lot to say.

If you carefully planned your “Tour of Vermont Churches” day you could…

Attend a service, enjoy a pancake breakfast, crash a wedding, play a round of forty-five, make more new friends at a roast pork supper, discuss local road conditions with a select board, and swing your partner at a square dance.

And the winner is…

Each month I draw one random Day in Vermont subscriber to win a free print. Our winner for April is Jonathan Morgan of Plainview New York. Jonathan chose “Fox Farm” and had this to say…

“After being raised in Vermont but no longer a resident I always try to find reminders of how special a place it is to me. It is also something that I share with my children and this will be going on the wall of my youngest son’s bedroom.

I love Peter’s art and it is an amazing thing to be able to browse his gallery as if it were a flip book of all of the important places from my life. I thank you for that Peter.”

I remember that Church! What a great picture! I love Church Suppers! Good food and so much fun!

I enjoy seeing each week how you have “edited” a scene to make a better painting. Subtle differences can elevate a simple scene to an art form, be it subtraction or addition of an element, an alteration in perspective, emphasis of a strategic curve or shadow or even the slightest adjustment of color or tone. Once again you have succeeded in brightening the day for all your weekly followers.

Thanks for your kind words Brian. I suppose some changes I make are certainly intentional, but some are accidental. (Often the best ones!) Throw in a few blatant “mistakes” that I chose to leave alone and now you are close to the final result.

I love the colors, and the way you added and subtracted from the photograph to compose the painting. Churches are such a part of my Vermont, and my New England.
    Thanks Peter

Thank you Thomas, like most of us, I’m ready for Spring and perhaps that shows in the color here…emphasised just a bit. 🙂

This painting is an enticement to a journey, a choice. The yellow street divider is the yellow brick road. I want to walk this street to the church; a destination with promise. This is a beautiful rendention that translates a regular photo, shot with an artistic eye, into an emotional experience of promise.

I do like painting streets and roads, and the way they lead us toward something good. Thanks very much Teresa!

Thus is the church I grew up in; got married in. This view is seldom seen. Have walked “around the Green” many times, walking this same road. Love this scene. Thanks for sharing this view.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Congrats Dale Susan, I’ve been to a few weddings here myself. (not my own!) After driving this road many hundreds of times, I noticed this view as a potential composition a few weeks ago and knew I would have to paint it.

Always nice to view the older churches. They show a message from the original community. Glad you captured the steeple…it is eloquent. Cindy

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Aside from their obvious “religious” aspect, so many Vermont churches serve as the community hub, cultural and social center. Important role indeed. Thanks Cynthia!
