Life is a Carnival Aug 15, 2016

As the hot August sun starts to set around Vermont, carnival and fair lights come up to illuminate the evening skies.

I stumbled onto this one last week in Manchester.

You’ll always find a bountiful feast for the eyes, nose, ears, and taste buds. Step right up!

As for another game of chance, the winner is…

Each month I draw one random Day in Vermont email subscriber to win a free print of their choice.

Starting next month, (Sept) I’ll be drawing two winners each month.

I’m sure having fun, and I hope you are too. Thank you once again for all your support.

Our winner for August is Kim Chase of Hinesburg, Vermont.

Kim chose “Sissy’s Kitchen“, and had this to say…

“Well, first and foremost, Vermont is my home state and will always be near and dear to my heart, no matter where I may travel in the world. I was born in Burlington, so I’m a native woodchuck and proud of it.

Vermont is truly a magical place for a child to grow up in. I’ve brought my children back to Vermont as much as possible while they were growing up so that they too could experience the freedom of being a kid in Vermont.

I love Vermont(ers) for their independent way of life and thinking. We care about each other and the world. Vermonters think globally in “we” terms and that what we do each day does matter. I’ve carried this mindset with me for the past 29 years since I moved away from Vermont to marry my military husband and it’s served me well.”

And speaking of hot Vermont sunsets…

I started this large painting at Art in the Park last weekend and finished it in the studio this week. The scene is from Middletown Springs. We’ve certainly had some stunning sunsets this year.

Sure does remind me of my youth at the county fairs. Very nostalgic! !

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I too have great youthful memories of the fairs Dhyan. I think all that comes through in the work somehow.

  • Saw “Vermont Sunset” while you were working on it at Art In The Park last weekend. Just awesome Peter!! I’m thrilled to have witnessed your journey once again. Always a pleasure and a surprise to see the finished product evolve…..such a joy. Thanx again, Peter.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks very much Mary Fran, as we both know, the life of the artist is an ongoing journey of exploration and discovery. Glad we have been able to travel some of the path together.

I can almost hear the calliope, smell the fried dough, and revel in the joyous laughter of happy children! The warm colors emphasize the energy of the scene, and the three “circular” rides, each seen from a different angle caught my interest in a special way.
Second, it was great to finally meet you in person this past week in Waitsfield. Visiting with you and seeing your thought process in action as you worked will certainly be a highlight of the summer.
Finally, colors beautifully done in the sunset and echoed in the highway along the bottom of the Art in the Park painting. Well done, as always!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

So good to meet you and your wife Brian! Thanks for making the trip to Waitsfield. Now I know the man behind the words. Hope you can visit the studio sometime too.

  • Dianne Trivers says:

Love the way you handle the oils.
    Great capture of a carnival.

Wow! When first seeing the Carnival I thought: amazing detail! The swings I used to LOVE; this churns up lots of memories as a kid in Vt. The sunset is stunning! Looking at it my eyes start @ road level.. great hay harvest; rolling hills, multiple trees and then the burst of nature’s color. Thank you so much Cynthia

Oh My! Having some mobility issues today; opened yor email and BAM! LIFE IS A CARNIVAL. It is indeed. You gave me the biggest smile. Taking a trip down memory lane to the carnivals of my youth; when there were side shows. There is so much life and expectation of fun in this piece. Thanks.

After 2 weeks without my computer I find your e-mail. What beautiful color mix, you can FEEL the viewing experience. Now “VERMONT SUNSET”, Talk about feeling, how do you keep raising your own bar? Have you no ceiling?? 14 days and I see measurable skill evolution. What a witnessing! Unheard of!!! Thanks.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks so much Chris! (and Nancy?) On my best days, I do feel like I’m making progress. As you know I do try to work hard to grow and stretch. Thanks again and welcome home!

Thank you, Peter, for spending your day with Gary and I while you put your magic on canvas. Painting Chapman’s General Store in Middle Granville is such a gift, not only to us, but to our entire community!!! This store has so many connections to all who live here. This is our hub. The place to get gasoline, coffee, an ice cream cone, some penny candy, a meal, a friendly conversation, the latest news….or just a giant hug. It is where people stop for directions or connect with their lost dog. You being here was such a special time for both of us. Not only are you such a talented painter, but you are also a very compassionate individual and teacher. I would like to do it all over again and write down all your words of wisdom, advice and inspiration. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget this day!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks so much for the kind words Marti, it was a day to remember for sure. It was my pleasure painting with you and Gary (and friends) there, and I think all the good vibes found their way into the resulting painting. I’ll be in touch later this week to deliver. Thanks again! P.
