The act of painting offers an artist the opportunity to consider a subject from several directions. There’s the outward appearance…. what are the shapes and colors, and how do they all fit together? There might be an overall mood that sparks an emotional response, or maybe a memory. How can I communicate that on a canvas? Sometimes a subject becomes a catalyst for personal artistic insight and inquiry.
The best paintings perhaps, contain all three.
While painting this piece I was thinking about the big boulder in the river. Under some great force of glacial activity, it landed there 20,000 years ago.
How many peaceful summer days has it enjoyed, and floods endured? How many yet to come?
