Woodward Reservoir Sep 28, 2015

We’ve had quite a stretch of spectacular days lately.

Last Thursday I got to watch the sun set on Woodward Reservoir in Plymouth.

Thankfully I had a brush in my hand.

I’m profoundly grateful to experience the beauty of Vermont as an artist.

It’s an honor and privilege to share that experience with you.

Fall Open Studio Weekend

As you may know I recently moved my studio.

Unfortunately I was unable to commit to participating in the official Open Studio Weekend at the time of sign up.

It’s coming up this weekend, October 3 & 4.

I will however be painting at one of the official locations on the map…. Sissy’s Kitchen in Middletown Springs!

I’ll plan to be there between 11AM and 2:00 both Saturday and Sunday. Stop by and say hello, have lunch at Sissy’s, and make sure to visit Rising Meadow Pottery just a few doors down. It’s all good!

I don’t think I ever mentioned it before, but I like the rather blocky, abstract way you often handle foliage. It adds to the artistry without getting in the way of portraying a realistic scene. Also, in this present painting, I like the repeating bands of blue that not only draw the viewer into the depths of this peaceful scene, but also echo the lines of the fallen tree. A fine painting, as always.

Thank you Brian, another spot on critique. I think I am most at home in the “semi-abstract” range of expression, typically leaning one way or another towards representation or abstraction in each painting. I like a little of both, of course. The horizontal dominance in this painting was there (representation), but also served to establish the stable (aka peaceful, serene, etc) abstract design. The bans of blue also follow an important principle of design…repetition with variety.

Oh, Peter, Woodward Reservoir is one of my favorite places on the planet! Thank you for that one! If you’ve never paddled around to the Floating Island, it would likely be a wonderful subject for painting, especially in the spring when the pitcher plants are blooming.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Rosemary, glad I stumbled onto it! It’s indeed beautiful there. It’s been a long time since I paddled anywhere, but if I go out on the water again some day I’ll try to find your island.

Good morning Peter , yes that is a great place to drop the kayak…. smooth calm water,…. almost like glass…. which you have captured. Great trout fishing early spring and right now as the water is getting colder and the trout are once again active. Take good care ol’ friend, Rick.Stott/Fisherman.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Rick! Once I found painting I gave up on a lot of other activities, like fishing. I do miss that tug on the line from time to time.

Like the reflected land between water expanses…
