How does an artist decide what to paint?

As I continue on my art journey, the question becomes what not to paint.

The more I look, learn, and grow, the more beauty I see in everything. It’s all so darn good.

Then there are the practical considerations, like where to park and set up.

Here, the Wells Village Library provided permission and a perfect vantage point.

And the Winners are…

Each month I draw two random Day in Vermont email subscribers to win a free print of their choice.

It’s one way I can say thanks for your continued support.

Our first winner for June is Martha Russell of Winston-Salem, NC. Martha chose “Sherman’s Store” and had this to say…

“I’m selecting your print of Sherman’s Store in West Rupert. This print is very personal for me as my dear cousin and her family live in West Rupert and have spent a lot of time there as well. Lots of good memories of trips to Sherman’s Store. I think that was the first time I ever saw a 40 lb hoop of cheese just waiting to be cut. I agree with others who say there is a special feeling about  Vermont – seems like when I enter the state I can feel myself relax. Some dear friends in Tinmouth suggested I sign up for emails from you. I”m so glad I did!! I grew up in a rural area of Washington County, NY only about 20 miles from the border so many of your paintings resonate me- reminders of things from home! I look forward to Monday mornings when your paintings come- gets my  week started off on a positive note!! As you can see by my address I live in a much bigger area now but we have four seasons here and lots of rolling hills all around so that helps. When I do get home to visit I manage to have”A Day in Vermont” each time!!!”

Our second winner is Judy Cole of Middlebury, VT. Judy chose “Middlebury Falls” and had this to say…

“Vermont means Home to me as it has been my home for most of my life. My husband and I have experienced its beauty and the kindness of its people on trips to visit all 251 towns, though Middlebury is home, and you have captured the beauty of our falls in this painting. Thank you so much. I am thrilled to be the winner of one of your beautiful paintings, which I have enjoyed seeing each week.  I have used them as background on my computer and look forward each week to a new one.”

I love all the small details of this street scene. I can easily picture driving thru …
Thanks for todays taste of Vermont. It’s a little bittersweet seeing this painting as we’ve had to skip our usual vacationing in South Hero this year. Hope to be back in 2021!

  • Randy Priest says:

I have lived in Southern NJ my entire life. Vermont and all of your paintings remind me of my childhood (50-60 years ago) when all towns people knew one another, most businesses were “Mom & Pop stores”, life seemed to move at a slower pace and neighbors cared for their neighbors. Please Vermont and Peter, stay the course. I absolutely love Vermont and “A Day In Vermont”!

  • Sheila McCormack says:

Lovely painting! Such a quaint, idyllic, patriotic scene. If only the walls of those buildings could talk and share stories about the events that occurred in Wells throughout the years and the people who resided there.

  • Susan Oliver says:

Absolutely beautiful painting and poem! Just wish I hadn’t been too late to bid!
