August Meadow Aug 26, 2013

When I was a younger I’d spend considerable time searching for great subjects. OK, I still do.

My good friend Bob Sydorowich says it’s not what we paint, but how we paint it.

A simple Vermont landscape can become a gentle melody of color and quiet appreciation.

With experience an artist can see potential everywhere, in everything, and in everyone.

I think we are all artists.

August Meadow was painted en plein air.

Plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air.”

For this artist, each painting is the distillation of a glorious Vermont experience.

I’m profoundly grateful for the opportunity to capture those moments in paint.

And share them with you.

Thank you very much Sue. I have fun with the writing. The painting process often provides insights that seem appropriate to share.

Beautiful and delicate piece. A definite reminder of an early summer morning!

  • Edie says:

I don’t know how you do it, Peter…twice a week you come up with another gem. This one is late summer; soon autumn will give you more to “play with”. Thanks.

I don’t really know either Edie. It’s a challenge for sure, but a wonderful one. Running out of subjects won’t ever be a problem. As you say, the ever changing seasons and diverse beauty of Vermont would provide enough inspiration for a thousand artistic lifetimes.

Peter it is the paradox you speak of that is so relatable. The brain would tell me If I didn’t have the right subject, no use painting, then the other side, the artist side would be almost overwhelmed with the number of possiblities. Beautiful painting, love the harmony! I’ve taken classes from Bob Sydorowich and all that he says resonates for me indefinitely!! It was his words it not what you paint but how you paint it that I found so inspiring. Keep up the great work. Was at Mountain Top Inn today admiring your watercolors, just thought you should know!

Thanks very much Amber. I’m heading out to paint with Bob this morning and I’ll be sure to say hello for you!
