Garden Glory Jul 23, 2018
How do we measure time? Usually in a horizontal, matter of fact way called length.
Example: “I worked on this painting in Sissy’s garden for three hours on Saturday, then another four in my studio yesterday. This painting took me seven hours to complete.”
With art however, time becomes vertical. Duration doesn’t matter much, while direction does. An optimal experience is measured in height.
Example: “Time stands still as a new painting comes to life. Butterflies dance in the air, along with my brush. Bees buzz and birds chirp in happy harmony. The glorious colors of nature sparkle like jewels in the summer sun, rewarding us all.”

And the Winners Are…
As a way to say thanks for your tremendous support, I draw two random free print winners each month. Congratulations to our winners for July!
Our first winner is Kate Langworthy, of Pueblo, Colorado. Kate chose “Middlebury Snow Bowl“, and had this to say…
“Wow! I never win stuff, and this is the best gift. You have a real eye for the life of each place you paint and I like the flow of your pieces. There were so many scenes I could have chosen as a native Vermonter, but the one with very fond memories is Middlebury Snow Bowl. So many days risking life and limb (lol) before the days of modern ski equipment, when it was still cheap to ski. For me Vermont is home. It is the place of my ancestors and lives in my soul. Maple sugar, Cheddar cheese with apple pie, fiddleheads, small farms, Lake Champlain, Huntington Gorge, Bread and Puppet theatre, contra-dances, First Night, Town Meeting day are only a few of the things that make Vermont special to me. Thanks for letting us share in your love for Vermont.”
Our second winner is Valerie Triolo, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Valerie chose “Town Band“, and had this to say…
“I AM ECSTATIC. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS. I AM COMPUTER ILLITERATE AND AM SENDING FROM MY PHONE SO I MAY HAVE TO SEND ON SEVERAL PARTS. OF COURSE I AM THRILLED AND MY FAVORITE PRINT WAS THIS PAST ONE….I FORGOT THE NAME….THE CHURCH AND COUNTRY SEEN IN SUMMER….FOLKS IN THE GRASS AND SHADOWS IF SUN….I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT…..SO MUCH I COULD CRY….. (Please excuse caps as I don’t see well…but I am also screaming with excitement ). I LOVE VERMONT FOR ITS QUAINTNESS….I GREW UP IN THE COUNTRY IN THE NORTHEAST AND WILL ALWAYS FEEL AT PEACE, AT HOME, AND COMFORTABLE THERE….VERMONT MAKES ME FEEL THAT WAY. NOTHING REPLACES HOW I GREW UP IN THE COUNTRY….AND YOUR PAINTINGS BRING ME THERE…SO CLEARLY. ALL THE FEELINGS AND SENSES WAKE AGAIN. I CAN SMELL THE EARTH AND AIR AND APPRECIATE THE CHANGES OF SEASON AND SEE THE COLORS THROUGH YOUR PAINTINGS….IT SO BRINGS PLEASURE TO MY MIND….NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THE MEMORIES OF BEING THERE WHEN YOU ARE AWAY….AND YOUR PAINTINGS BRING IT ALL BACK. OH PETER, I COULD NOT EVER THANK YOU ENOUGH. THE PAINTING I REQUEST IS THE ONE FROM THIS PAST MONDAY….I MUST LOOK UP THE NAME…CHURCH TOO IS EXTREMELY SPECIAL TO ME AS IT TOO REMINDS ME OF THE CHURCH I ATTENDED IN THE COUNTRY DURING MY CHILDHOOD. THANK YOU, THANK YOU….I HAVE NEVER EVER RECEIVED OR WON SUCH A GIFT!!!! SO VERY GRATEFUL.”

This is an exceptionally powerful design! Strong vertical movement with a few counterbalancing horizontal and diagonal elements as well; dominant cool color with striking warm accents; area of focusing light framed by the beauty of butterfly and flowers. Wow!
I agree with you Brian. Have a nice day.
Thanks Brian!
Too the point…. one of the many aspects of this
Painting that really grabs me … the view from
Below looking out… like I’m a little fairy that’s contemplating
Dancing on a mushroom ballroom and just by chance look up and here’s what I see
Kinda abstract kinda surreal but ever my world …. glorious
Thanks Christy!
Many artists loved to paint flowers. Spectacular colors, attractive forms und special odors. The summer with its expressions in flora and fauna was always a theme for painters. So you found the fragile butterfly sitting on this blue-red blooming flower regarded by somebody relaxing in the meadow. Near by. It’s the privilege of a painter to focus things like he wants to see them. The contrasts are expressive and you filled the painting with verticals and diagonals. What a fine composition.
Thanks Doris!
