Pip’s Barber Shop Apr 24, 2014

Years ago I teased my Dad about his bald spot.

Now, he has more hair left than me.

Justice has been served.

We got our haircuts together at Pip’s last week.

And like the sign on the wall says…

Get in. Sit down. Shut up. Hold On.

New Painting

As promised, below is a brand new oil painting.

This piece was inspired by A Day in Vermont watercolor I did this winter, “Under the Cold January Sun.”

I really liked that composition and wanted to go further with oil, adding elements of opacity and physical texture. I think the rich depths of the Vermont winter wilderness really come to life.

    Awesome job Peter!Ilove it!

  • Patricia says:

My Dad, my brothers, and my husband all frequented Pips. Although we now live in Florida, my husband gets a haircut from Marty when we visit Rutland.

  • David Churchill says:

Get picture of an old timey Vermont barber shop.

  • Nancy Edmunds says:

Chris left me a quickie drawing last week of a T-shirt with the words, “Does this shirt make my forehead look bigger?” Gotta’ love it.
I’ve not seen you do many people. I like it! Love the oil too.

  • Sherri Camp says:

Love it Peter – my dad was a barber – brings back memories of his place.

  • sukie knight says:

Love the face on the closest man, and all that detail. My dad used to take us to the barber shop with him when he went to get a cut. My brothers got their MOhawk cuts in a shop like this. So many wonderful memories are stirred up with your fantastic art. Thank you so much for letting us preview the magic of your brushes each week. It is a true treat for me.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Sukie, I did get into the detail a bit more than usual on this one. There were so many interesting things to paint, and they all help tell a great story of an authentic place and authentic people.

  • Teresa Gillam says:

Love the Mountain Glen in watercolor and oil. Would like to see them in person to really see the nuances.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

You are very right Teresa, all original art is best appreciated in person. Virtually every customer who gets one of my paintings from the web says “wow, it looks even better in person!” The oils especially are that much better because of the physical texture, and as you say, subtle nuance. Thanks!

    Peter,
This is great! Brings back the memories of the boys first haircut!
Joe sang at our wedding 36 years ago and his daughter, Paula Reynolds, was the Phys. Ed. teacher for all of my children!
Sitting and waiting at Pip’s was never a dull moment!
Love those blues and the reflections in the mirrors are just great!
You have that wonderful talent to recreate those special moments at our favorite places!
    Thank you again!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thank you Mary, I don’t know about wonderful talent, but I’m glad that I get to paint what I love…and happier still that many nice people like you just happen to love the same things!

  • Carmen Muscatello Thompson says:

Thank you so much for this painting!!!!! We love it and our family members in the painting!!!! Great job!

  • Paula Muscayello Reynolds says:

This is a wonderful painting…. my dad is the far barber in it!!! Thank you for your detail!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I don’t often paint people, but when I do I find them to be very interesting subjects. Each of us has a distinct personality and “shape”, and I try to capture that individuality. Thanks Paula!

Thanks for a great picture of the three best barbers in VT

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Glad I could capture a little slice of time in the long history of this great shop. When I look for subjects, I am drawn to “authenticity.” This is it. Thanks Susan!
