Stone Meadow Dec 8, 2014

This pastoral stone farm sits along Route 103 just north of Chester.

It’s just one example of the amazing granite architecture in the area.

The sheep were out grazing just before the snow last week.

They look ready for a long winter with their thick wool coats.

I’m not so sure about the rest of us.

And the winner is…

Each month I get to give away a free print to one random subscriber.

It’s one small way I can say thanks for your amazing support.

I use Random.org to generate a number and then find the winner on my Day in Vermont subscriber list.

Our winner for December is Nancy Rae Mallery of Bradford, Vermont.

Nancy chose “Along the Trail“, and had this to say…

“To me, Vermont means wonderful winters, mountains and hiking and biking and skiing and touching the earth – gardens, clean water, fresh air… it means organic, it means independence. It means hope and pride. It means life.”

    This is wonderful.

My great-aunt used to live in one of these stone houses in the 40’s, 50’s 60’s (and probably earlier). We used to visit there a lot, and I have always loved them! Beautiful painting!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

They certainly have a special kind of character…solid, sturdy, and warm. A perfect fit for Vermont. Thanks Derry!

Beautiful! We have passed by so many times and always exclaim how beautiful this scene is. And now you have captured it on canvas. We have ordered the “Day in Vermont” book and it is on its way to us. Very excited to put it on our table for all to enjoy. Thank you, thank you.

Every time I have gone by I said “I’ve got to paint some of these” and finally had the opportunity last week. There are a few more that caught my eye…someday. Thanks for all the support Muriel!

Great colors Pete. Nice detail. Having property in Vermont is about having 3or4 buildings to take care of not just one. I really like it.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Great observation JB, and so true. I was just thinking I need to clean out my barn, move the lawn mowers, so I can get to the snow shovels. Thanks John, and happy holidays old friend!

  • David Churchill says:

Great picture. Cows looks so peaceful.

  • I was hoping you were not out today in this COLD weather, but perhaps you know how to dress for such temperatures! I am impressed how you start these pieces with the wash and then bring in the detail. BTW I like your lettering on A Day in Vermont! …and the sheep DO look peaceful!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I can dress pretty warm but I have my limits. So does the paint. Anything below 30 is a little nippy for extended outdoor work, at least for this old Vermonter. Each artist develops his/her own way of starting, and all are valid. I prefer to start loose and stay that way for a while. For me, that’s where much of the magic happens. The lettering in a Day in Vermont is a (bit exaggerated) form of my hand writing and painting signature, and yes, those are (supposed to be) sheep. 🙂 Thanks Lyna Lou!

It is a pleasure to see the farm in Chester. We buy our milk from Lisa Kaiman, who live next to left. We tried to bid, yet I have password issue. And the bid grew to bigger than me. Happy holidays. And best wishes, Cynthia f Ehlenfeldt

    1.

Peter, I especially like this one. The splash of purple really catches my eye.
The word “pastoral” came to mind so I Googled it and this is what I find,
“A work of literature portraying an idealized version of country life
(especially of land or a farm) used for or related to the keeping or grazing of sheep or cattle.”
    How appropriate!
    Thanks for sharing.
    Rob

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Hopper said, “If I could say if with words there would be no reason to paint.” That said, sometimes words can come close. Pastoral is one of those poetic words that effectively conjures up both visual imagery and emotion. Thanks Rob!
