Newport Vermont Nov 21, 2022

Newport Vermont – Genuine by Nature. The small Northeast Kingdom City is located on the southern shore of beautiful Lake Memphremagog, a 27-mile international lake which straddles the U.S. and Canadian border.”

I spent two late-September days painting here at the top of Vermont working on location, recently finishing in the studio. This may be the most complex composition I’ve attempted en plein air. There’s a lot going on, and I included only some of it… The Gateway Center and Waterfront, boardwalk, boats, (including the Northern Star out for a cruise) docks, buildings, a bicycle, mountains, clouds, water, fences, trees, train tracks, signs, flags, a copula, weathervane, and a life buoy. Simplification is job-one when facing a subject with so many components. As usual, I try to postpone the articulation of the many “things” until I have an underlying, unifying abstract concept firmly established. Here I saw, deeply felt, and ultimately expressed the dynamic forces of light, perspective, confluence, and directional movement that tie the whole scene together. Whew!

Wishing you and yours a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday. I’ll be posting the next Day in Vermont painting in three weeks rather than two, on Monday, Dec 12. My little workshop can get busy this time of the year, and I’m the only elf. Thank you very much for all your support!

I thoroughly love seeing your breathtaking pictures. We finally made a trip to Vermont about 12-15 years ago, so I get excited when you paint something we saw on that trip. We fell in love with the friendliness of the people, the beautiful scenery, interesting historical sites, parks, etc. I relive those memories when I see your paintings. Thank you for rekindling my joys.

I love how the trees glow . . . just like so many did this last fall!
