Grabowski Farm Sep 16, 2024
The Grabowski Farm on route 4A in West Rutland is famous for their sweet corn. I stopped by recently for half-a-dozen. By the time I made my purchase there was no doubt in my mind what my next painting would be. In a matter of minutes I had my corn, several good reference photos, and a great big smile.
It was perfect timing for fresh corn, and inspiration. I started this larger piece a few days later at a demonstration in Poultney for Septemberfest. It was a great day with just a touch of autumn in the air, so I decided to push the fall colors forward just a bit in anticipation of what’s to come.
In addition to the gorgeous red barn, I managed to include the elements and layers of landscape important to the subject; the corn field below, the train tracks cutting through the marsh, Route 4 above that (aka “the new highway” built in the 70’s) and Pico Peak beyond that. The cow and little barn cat completed the scene.
Original Sold. Next Day in Vermont Monday, Sept 30.

This painting is so typical Vermont from what I can
remember and I can taste that sweet corn. Thank you for these wonderful nostalgic moments. You’ve made our Mondays special with anticipation of what’s to come….
The fall colors make a good addition for this time of year
Gorgeous. I have always been in love with barns. This is just beautiful
I’m so happy I subscribe. This painting and narrative brightened my day! Thank you!
I think this is one of my favorites. Good to see the “new” highway included. I remember the start of the construction in the late 1960s. West Rutland will always be a special place to me.
always loved to drive by it on the old and new highway …Beautiful painting . Got a 3 copies of yours hanging in
our home now in Florida . Two covered bridges ,Cooley and Gorham and one Center Rutland Depot on my train section of my office.
