Bowers Covered Bridge Sep 22, 2025

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Andy Williams obviously wasn’t singing about fall, but that refrain runs through my head come September. Not only are the colors glorious, but outdoor painting conditions are often superb. The bugs dissipate and the winds subside. It’s not too hot, not too cold, and everything the autumn light touches turns into painterly gold.

I started this painting of Bowers Covered Bridge on location in Brownsville one late afternoon last week. With perfect conditions and a stellar Vermont subject, the odds of a good painting were in my favor.

Yes, autumn is the wonderful time of the year. Growing up on Long Island many years ago, we raked the leaves into the street and burned piles of them . The smell of burning leaves added dimension to the colors of the season.

There it is…this IS fall in Vermont. Nothing more peaceful and tranquil than a covered bridge inviting you to the other side to continue your adventure. Thanks Peter, you nailed it.

My husband has family in Montpelier, Barre and Hardwick. Our youngest daughter went to college there. I always loved driving to Vermont in the Fall. We would fully take advantage of the countryside whenever we went.
