Belmont General Store Nov 25, 2013
Many excellent ideas for paintings come from you.
A recent visitor to my studio suggested the Belmont General Store would make a great subject.
She went on to proclaim that the hamburgers there were unbelievably good.
In the name of artistic research, I confirmed she was right on both counts.

There are pros and cons to every artistic approach. And there are countless approaches.
To learn and fully appreciate what each approach, medium, and technique can do, I find it takes plenty of doing.
In a way every painting is an experiment. That means taking risks.
My usual (watercolor) approach for an architectural subject calls for at least some pencil lines to establish the main shapes and indicate perspective.
In this painting I skipped the drawing altogether and simply became the happy little boy I once was… playing with blocks.

Peter,
I really enjoy the slideshows and process of your art work. The before, during, and final touches of the paintings give me insight how an artist creates art.
Thanks for the comment Dan, glad you are enjoying it. Insight is a necessary component in the creative process, in my opinion. By definition it’s personal and meaningful. It’s kind of like a secret sauce in an artist’s recipe. The dish can taste a little bland without it.
Thank you for another great Vt. scene…wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Thanks very much Sue, you too. I am heading out soon to (try) and find a good “Thanksgiving” subject for Thursday’s post.
You have quite the talent to illuminate the very best in any scene!
On any given day I have a different definition of “Talent”. It’s a word that I have yet to make peace with. I’ll keep working on it. For now, as it applies to your nice compliment, I can say it’s 70% practice, 50% observational study, 22% judgement (what to include vs. what to leave out) 8% luck, 35% insight (as above) and 75% stubborn optimism. Thankfully, math ability is not a significant requirement.
Happy Thanksgiving Peter, to you & your family
And to you Brian, all the best from your friends in Vermont!
I love seeing the process, the final painting is incredible!
Thanks so much Celia, I am happy to be able to share my process with both artists like you, and self proclaimed non-artists (I think everyone is an artist in some way) who might like a sneak peak behind the curtain. I love to teach (aka share) and as they say, if you want to learn something, teach. I’m learning too!
Brings back a lot of great memories. Use to live in Ludlow, now in NH, so was in that store many times. They also use to sell paint, bought all of my house paint there. Very nice..
Thanks for the comment Tandee. Yes, you can get anything you need at a good General store. And even some things you don’t!
As a frequent visitor to Belmont, I really enjoy your rendition of the Belmont Store! I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work! Thank you!
Glad to have to aboard for our adventures Paula, Thank you!
