Chester Vermont Aug 20, 2018

I paid a visit to Chester and the Fullerton Inn recently.

Even though it was afternoon the warm glowing lights on the Inn’s front porch grabbed my attention.

Like flipping a switch, a new painting idea was born.

I love it when that happens.

Peter, I love how you were able to translate the photo into an evening painting. Love the parking lot/road colors and paint application. Can I ask you please. I have been painting in gouache. You mentioned in a comment to me a few months ago that I could use a varnish spray to not have to use glass. I do find that the colors darken after the spraying. I’ve tried matte, satin & gloss.Any suggestions? If you spray a watermedia panel, do you use matte, satin or gloss? Thanks for your help.

Hi Peter, it looks very “gemütlich” this Fullerton Inn. Chester, I suppose, is a traditional place and you pushed it with your colors into a very attractive inviting place. The blue hour, it was slightly raining before and now reflections of light on the street. The use of the complementary contrast is a delicate thing. It can be too strong but in your painting it’s the highlight. Many artists were attracted by the twilight, the especial mood between day and evening. So you do and we follow you to see Chester with other eyes.

My dear friend, who died suddenly in March, lived many years in Chester after leaving the hectic, urban life of NJ. She would often frequent the park to listen to a concert or simply to bring a young wolfhound that needed a distraction (watching folks) while she groomed him or her for an upcoming show. She loved the charm and quaintness of “her” town and took many beautiful photos of Chester and the surrounding area.
