Maple Moon Mar 10, 2025
Welcome back to A Day in Vermont!
As you may know, I took the last two months off from A Day in Vermont to hibernate and accomplish a few things on the to-do list. I’m happy to report progress was made. It’s good to be back and I’m definitely ready for longer, warmer days. It won’t be long now.
Today’s painting “Maple Moon” features a farmstead firing up the sugar shack for a cozy evening boil. New syrup will be tested and tasted, old stories will be told. There’s always something sweet to enjoy here in Vermont and maple production has March covered.
In my last post I mentioned some of the projects that I hoped to work on. Here are a few that actually happened…
First up was picture frame review, design, and production. Although I’ve now phased out print framing to allow more time to paint, I remain committed to offering a fine frame option for my original pieces. Working with my good friends at Quest Frames in Rutland, I’ve procured a new moulding profile that I’ll be using for the foreseeable future. The new standard frame reflects what I consider to be complementary to most of my paintings, and works well in most home decors. You may now opt for unframed, frame only, or frame with a hand-wrapped (my hands) linen liner. These are now available as an option for any original oil painting purchased from my studio or website. More details on frames HERE.

I also designed and built a new version of my mobile studio shelter. Essentially it’s just a tarp attached to a folding frame, a quick and simple roof extended off the tail end of my truck so I can paint in variable weather conditions. I love painting on “damp” days when the atmosphere is thick, colors are dancing, and surfaces are reflecting like sparkling jewels. As I get older and maybe wiser, every iteration gets lighter. I’ll post a photo of it in action soon.
In the studio, I had oodles of fun playing with paint, rearranging my color palette, and diving into the usual “deliberate practice” that keeps me enchanted and growing as an artist. I set up a new photography light and still-life shelf where I can adjust the strength of the light, and its kelvin temperature. I did about 25 small studies, with a few potential gems among them perhaps. I’ll post any that earn a signature. I’m now ready for the real flowers to bloom!
New Still Life Set Up in Studio
My website is again up to date. Most of the tasks were behind the scenes technical stuff. Thank you, Freshy!
I also added a few new prints to the website to catch up. The images below are from recent paintings sold from the easel or studio. Studio visits are always welcome and I’m open by appointment. Contact

Lastly, I finished a nice set of three paintings from a little get-away trip to Portsmouth, New Hampshire with my wife last year. I didn’t plan to paint anything but couldn’t help myself. These originals (and prints) are now available. Just click on the image to go to that piece.

I really like Maple Moon. When might prints be available?
How long does it generally take for you to have prints made?
I am always interested in your videos – I like to see the “hands on” aspects of painting.
I also like your inventiveness!. The painting roof you built for your truck is great!
Yes Holly, the print is now available. You can see the print options and order at the very bottom of this (long) post, just above this comment. Just holler if I can help further. Thank you! Peter
GREAT to have you back to brighten our week!
Love Maple Moon and new frame s perfect for it.
Thank you!
Thank you Margaret!
Just signed up for your delightful newsletter after catching you on Chronicle tonight! We spend a lot of time in the Upper Valley, we have family in Woodstock. Question: have you ever painted the lady slippers at Eshqua Bog?
I’m going to comb the site for Quechee hot air balloon images…
Thank you Chris, welcome aboard! I’ll have to check out the bog, but I do have balloons.. https://peterhuntoon.com/painting/balloons-over-quechee/
