Old Red Mill Sep 30, 2024
When I post a new painting it’s fun to string a few words together in an attempt to express what I think and feel. When it comes to communication, language reigns supreme. Anyone who can write or speak effectively has my admiration and respect. Many of the same principles seem to apply equally to good writing, speaking, and painting.
This is a painting of the Old Red Mill in Jericho, Vermont. As with many of my pieces, an aim here was to communicate a fairly accurate depiction of a specific place. If you happen to recognize it as such, I suppose we could call that success. But we both want more. Beyond the “where” is a dynamic realm of universal understanding and appreciation we all share. For this artist, that enchanting territory can only be fully explored and expressed in paint. My real motive here was to “communicate” what I experienced as the raw power, flow and action of the water, which has been harnessed into service (at least temporarily) by our industrious nature and human ingenuity.
“When we are bursting with some wordless experience, Art is our voice, the song of the heart.” Richard Schmid
Original Sold. Next Day in Vermont Monday, October 14.

the rocks look so strong. lots of work to do those
i’ve never seen the mill in Jericho, but the tumbling river boulders and the mill’s foundation instantly brought back memories of the ruins of Bennett’s mill in Orange, Vt. where I enjoyed fishing for native brook trout more than half a century ago.. You definitely captured the spirit and flavor of the scene to perfection.
Out of curiosity, what size was the original and the cost. There is one of your paintings for sale on Marketplace and I am trying to decide if a fair value? Love your work and I am from Vermont so even more dear to my heart!!!
Thank you Lenor and Brian! Diana, this original was 12X16 and sold for $950 framed. Thank you! Peter
