Spring Lake Barn Jun 16, 2025
Art can be risky business. Getting this painting of the lower barn at Spring Lake Ranch in Shrewsbury was a gamble. I think it paid off. I don’t take as many risks as I did as a young man, but I’m still willing to roll the dice for a good painting. I faced two possible dangers beyond soggy ground and cow pies in this one. A very robust looking electrical fence had to be navigated getting to my chosen spot. In a few trips from the truck, I carefully got myself and all my gear through. Carl, the wonderful Farm Manager stopped by later as I was painting. He mentioned the high number of joules running through the fence. That led me to ask Carl about the second risk I’d been wondering about. Where’s the bull?
Original Sold. Next Day in Vermont Monday June 30, 10:30AM.

Like Spring the colors are soft. Very nice
Love the barn with so many stories escaping from every weathered board. The roof bursts forth with new color and new life for days of shelter yet to come. I can imagine the ankle deep black muck and and the odor of compost and manure but I don’t dwell long there. The focus is the sturdy barn built by sturdy, hard working men for themselves and future generations. Well done Vermonters of old and well captured Peter.
This is really beautiful and Spring Lake is where we go to swim every time we visit Vermont in August or September. I loved your description of the “journey” and, yes, they used to have a bull…lol!
Ohhh my goodness…I grew up at SLR…my dad was the chef there fir 26 yrs. I usex to play in this barn and make hay forts❤️❤️❤️ I love this..I have the painting you did of Spring Lake.. this is a beautiful place to groq up. I really want this .. you always hit us Vermonters at heart
Another Vermont Barn falling into ruin….its so great that you capture glimpses of their glory, Peter. As a youngster, our family had a farm with a large barn that offered warmth & shelter to the animals, especially during the winter nights. I loved it when the lights were on in the early evening with all the cows snuggled in for the night. Your beautiful paintings bring back so many fond memories of the innocents of days gone by.
PS : be careful of those bulls, Peter
Thank you for the kind comments folks!
Hi Peter, it’s a long time ago that I was writing. But in the meantime I looked and made a decision: this barn is my favourite.
