Spring Stoic Apr 7, 2025

Today’s painting depicts a great blue heron striking the classic statuesque pose. Still and silent stalking the shore, the magnificent bird merges into the rushes and reeds. Repeating patterns and textures of nature become a playground for the paintbrush, a delight to emulate in paint. Credit to my dear brother in law David Friedland for the excellent reference photo. Thank you Uncle David!

My first formal introduction to Philosophy was at Castleton College in 1982. One of my favorite professors was Joe Jardine. (aka “Dr. J.”) Class-appropriate monikers were liberally applied. Each class had its existentialist, nihilist, idealist, cynic, optimist, and skeptic. For some reason I was tagged the stoic. Probably because I sat in the back, and although I didn’t say much, I was riveted.
