Stone Chapel Jan 4, 2016

I wandered up the mountain trail behind the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe last week.

Deep in the woods a little Stone Chapel quietly resides.

Werner von Trapp built it as a gesture of thanksgiving to mark his safe return from the war.

It’s a profoundly peaceful place to ponder, pray, or paint.

Happy New Year!

Hopefully you are off to a great start for 2016. Thank you for joining me for another year of artistic adventure here on A Day in Vermont. I’m grateful for your continued support and couldn’t do this without you.

As a small way to say thanks we’ll continue to draw one random winner each month to win a free print. We currently have 5270 subscribers. If and when we hit 7000, I’ll draw two winners each month.

I’ll be drawing a January winner from our subscriber list this week.

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2016!

It’s great to see that we’ve started another year with “A Day In Vermont”! I always anticipate your next piece of art and wonder where you will be taking us next. It always warms my heart and puts a smile on my face.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I wonder too, Randy! Each week is an adventure. I put the finishing touches on this piece just hours before post time. I guess that’s how life is supposed to be, and I kind of like it that way.

  • Christine says:

This is a study. I love the variety of grays popping out of the sea of yellow. Very beautiful!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Yes, lot’s of study on this one Christine. My two main concerns in execution were to get the values right, and to “play” with the palette knife. Great to see you last week!

  • Charlene Whitehouse says:

I love Stowe Trapp Family Lodge. I have been there and I never get sick of the view. Your painting is absolutely Gorgeous.

  • Chris Thrane says:

Peter, I cannot count the times we have been to the cahpel via foot or on cross country skis. Such a peaceful setting as is the entire Trapp property. Well done Peter!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

One of these days we are going to meet on a trail or street Chris. That will be fun. Thanks and happy new year old friend!

  • Patricia Beach says:

I would like to watch you paint, but don’t know ahead of time where you will be painting. I love the bright colors in your paintings. I have a print of the Minerial Springs, in Middletown. I lived there many years ago. Thanks. Pat Beach

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Pat, one challenge is that I never know where I’ll be either. In the spring I’ll plan another “On the Spot” event, and invite anyone who wants to come paint or watch. In the meantime you are always welcome to visit my studio and look over my shoulder for a bit.

  • David Churchill says:

    Beautiful and serene!

  • John Ozier says:

We look forward in Louisiana to following you in 2016, Peter. It was good to see you in October at the arts and crafts show in Rutland in October and adding to our collection of your prints.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

It was great seeing and talking with all the Oziers at Art in the Park John. I hope next time you can drop by by studio and say hello!

  • Patricia Driscoll says:

A profound gesture of thanks by Mr.von Trapp captured by your talent in a moment of time. Spiritually gracious and lovingly executed. Thank you!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

I learned that Mr. von Trapp carried each stone up that mountain on his back by himself. Wow! We could all learn something from that example of gratitude. Thank you Patricia!

I love it, living in the southwest we have awesome scenery, more cactus than trees, amazing the diversity of our United States.

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Tim, every region has its own personality, like each of us. Growing up and living in Vermont for so long now, I guess it’s in my bones. I’ll have to try painting a cactus someday.

  • Muriel Brown says:

Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter you find the most exquisite places to paint and the best part is you so perfectly capture the pure beauty of each one for us all to enjoy !! Happy New Year and Happy painting and sharing!!

beautiful and you captured the peace and tranquility so well Peter! What a talent you possess! I absolutely love your paintings! Just the mountains themselves are beutiful and being from NY state I love anything that captures the unique qualities of our area (Vermont included of course! LOL) thank you!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks for including Vermont Mary! I’ll have to admit (if pressured) that there are some stunningly beautiful places in NY, too. 🙂

  • Brian Blaine says:

I’m at a loss for anything else to add to the many insightful comments others have written on this weeks painting, Peter. Will a humble thank you suffice? Looking forward to another great year, and one of my resolutions for 2016 is to meet you in person, hopefully this coming summer.

  • Brian Dugan says:

Happy New Year Peter. Glad to have you back.

  • cynthia adams says:

Your work simply takes my breath away. Just beautiful!

  • Steve Heim says:

Beautiful painting, Peter! Loose and free, expressive color, bullseye values! Really love this one. Happy 2016!

    • Peter Huntoon says:

Thanks Steve, and happy new year to you! As you might guess, the apparent loose and free result came with the usual wonderful “struggle”. I checked the values at the end with my little red glass… yep, close enough. 🙂
