Autumn Road Nov 1, 2021

I love to paint roads for a number of reasons. This one is a back road in Tinmouth.

On the practical side, it’s usually where I happen to be when I’m compelled to pull over to paint.

It’s also a familiar motif that provides interesting design and compositional possibilities.

My favorite reason perhaps, a road can tell a story that signifies momentum, transition, and progress, leading us toward new discoveries.

The honeycomb yellows in the road and trees lure me to travel forward and wonder what is over the next hill. The invitation you gave me has me packing my suitcase. Thank you for the happy Monday scene.

When we lived in Vermont in 1964-67 we owned two Checker autos since they had 10 1/2 inch clearance and could navigate the dirt roads with a center hump. We think we hit 905 of all roads in the state, including some in gores! Our SAAB , known as the ” chubby car”, which required that you put oil in the gasoline tank, and was before SAAB went luxurious, was not usable on those roads. Every one in Vermont should have owned a CHECKER marathon sedan, which were made from about 1957 to 1982 in Kalamazoo, MI

Your artistic aesthetic lens transmogrifies stark reality into an abstract rabbit hole of whimsical madness…into which I fall every time.
Praise be to your spark of madness…and gravity!

This is your best painting of the season, hands down! Color, texture, composition, and a hint of mystery just around the bend in the road…
